As you may have noticed, under the anime section on this forum we now have a sub board for every basic genre of anime as well as a sub board for discussing anime in general. If you're new to the world of this fabulous media you may be confused on what genre means what and how each of these sub boards should be posted on. Never fear, Lead Otaku is here to help out.
General Anime Discussion
General Anime Discussion is a place for you to talk about anime in general. For example, a thread on what your favourite anime is, or what your first anime was would go here. If you're not sure where an anime would fall under here is also a fantastic place to put it, and staff will move your thread if needed. Discussion about any sexually explicit anime is forbidden.
Action
Action anime is anything that follows the primary plot of action to push the story. It should be relatively easy to pick out which anime follow this standards but in general if there is a weapon on the screen for at least 40% of the time and is being used every episode there is a good chance that this anime is an action anime. Examples would be anime like Black Lagoon, Attack on Titan, Hunter x Hunter, and One Piece.
Adventure
Adventure anime are anime that involve the main party of protagonists going on a grand quest or journey in order to resolve a problem made clear at the start of the series with one main protagonist having to do this as a right of passage, honour bound task, or any other generally noble cause. This genre commonly bleeds into other genres like Action and Fantasy and is a vary broad category for later anime. Examples would be anime like //.hack, Inuyasha, Ruroni Kenshin, and Pokemon.
Comedy
Primarily comedy anime are anime without an overlaying plot and are purposely created for soul reason to make you laugh. They are the most common genre of anime and bleed into almost every other genre surrounding them. It should be pretty straightforward on weather or not an anime is a comedy. Examples would be anime like Keroro Gunso, Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Space Dandy.
Demon
Demon anime are anime that deal with or are based around the unholy beings known as demons. The type of "demon" usually varies from anime to anime but overall they have the same basic concept and are vary serious toned a majority of the time. This genre usually bleeds the most into action and fantasy. Examples would be anime like Soul Eater, Bleach, Kyoukai no Kanata, and Yumekui Merry.
Drama
Drama anime are, as the title states, anime that have a vary dramatic based story or a commonly dramatic tone. They can be anywhere from action to romance but they never un-include the element of drama from themselves. Examples would be anime like PapaKiki, AnoHana, Little Busters!, and Fate/stay night.
Ecchi
Ecchi anime are anime that have a longer-than-usual screen time of fanservice. Fanservice can range from anything as to locker-room shots, up-skirts, shower-shots, and other things of this nature that would appeal to the, dare I say, perverted portions of the mind. These anime are normally geared at a male demographic but can also be used to aim on the other direction. As for the general anime discussion, discussions on sexually explicit anime is forbidden so if you're confused on weather or not something would be appropriate to talk about here don't hesitate to ask any staff. Examples would be anime like The Monogatari Series, Problem Children, Oreimo, and Henneko.
Fantasy
Fantasy anime are anime set in a fantasy-like setting with things like magic are common. These anime often bleed into the larger genre of action and adventure and as these two commonly consist of fights against a greater evil using fantasy objects in attempts to complete a grand quest. Examples would be anime like Soul Eater, Blue Dragon, Fairy Tail, and Blue Exorcist.
Game
Game anime are anime based around the grand concept of the characters playing a game or based off of a game of any sort. These anime are more rare and bleed into several genres, however are always primarily game oriented and have a demographic of gamers. Examples would be anime like Sword Art Online, Accel World, the movie Summer Wars, and Yugioh.
Harem
Harem anime are any anime in which the main character, weather female or male, is a character romantically appealing to a large number of girls or boys. Harem can come in any way shape or form ranging from anywhere like the main character constantly being swarmed by a group of girls or like the main character having a large number of romantic partners to pick from that he/she feels the same about all of them. Dependless of how the much the anime shines its harem suit it normally consists of whatever girls or boys are trying to get to our main character, in a way, competing for his or her love while being fully aware of each other. Examples would be anime like Rosario Vampire, Date A Live, Uta no Prince-Sama, and Fruits Basket.
Historical
Historical anime are extremely uncommon compared to all of the other genres of anime. These anime are anime that are based off of major historical moments, mostly in Japan, and are presented in a more interesting way than sitting in history class. Examples would be anime like Ruroni Kenshin, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Hetalia.
Horror
Horror anime are anime that are specifically crafted to crawl into your mind and give you a deep sense of fear due to the anime convincing your mind that anything you watch can and will happen to you. These anime commonly are paired with the psychological genre and, though rare, are extremely popular when released. Examples would be anime like Another, Elfin Lied, When They Cry, and Corpse Party.
Psychological
Psychological anime are anime created on the premise to work on people with quick thinking minds and use the viewers intellect to craft a story usually better than that of a normal anime. These anime are commonly paired with horror for a stronger effect, however can stand with any other genre to make them pack an even bigger punch. Examples would be anime like Fate/Zero, Death Note, and Mirai Nikki.
Romance
Romance anime are anime geared around the main plot point being a couple and the day to day things they go through to get together and what they do after the fact. This anime can come in all shapes and sizes as even harem is technically considered romance anime (though you should discuss harem in the board made for them) and this genre can literally pair with any genre to give it a lasting impression. Examples are anime like Clannad, ef, Angel Beats, and ToraDora.
